Summary

The series in Metallurgy and Materials science has been initiated during the Diamond Jubilee year of the Indian institute of Metals (IIM). In the last decade, the progress in the development of metallurgy and materials science has been rapid and extensive, giving us a whole new array of materials with a wide range of applications, and a variety of techniques for both processing and characterization. With the help of an expert editorial panel of rich eminence, the series aims to make an authentic science and knowledge base available to a wide spectrum of readers through textbooks, monographs on select topics by experts in the field , and proceedings of select international conferences organized by the Indian Institute of Metals.

The demands on metals to perform under severe service conditions necessitates rapid advances in the design and development of materials and associated technologies .The Indian Institute of Metals organized on International Symposium on Frontiers in the Design of Materials-FDM 2005, primarily to discuss the current trend in the design of advanced materials, their processing and characterization. An exciting range of topics including alloy design, nanomaterials, structural alloys, coatings, functional materials and nuclear materials was discussed, covering both fundamental research aspects and practical approaches necessary to understand and find solutions to several problems in the design of materials. The current edited book presents the knowledge base and science to reasearchers, students and industries.
