Social Exclusion and Adverse Inclusion

Development and Deprivation of Adivasis in India

Summary

This volume focuses on themes of exclusion and inclusion vis-à-vis Adivasis in India. It locates issues of development and impediments to their growth within a larger regional, national, and even global, context. The discussion centres on the states of Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura, which have significant Adivasi populations.

It also analyses in-depth issues such as child mortality, hunger, poverty, livelihoods, gender, linguistic diversity, agriculture, and the development process. The book provides a guide for formulating policy in order to overcome deprivation faced by the Adivasis. In doing so, it highlights three important issues: the need to eliminate exclusion in access to services; to accept land and property rights as granted to other citizens; and to ensure adequate representation and voice to the Adivasis in deciding policies related to their lives and welfare.
