The Theatre of Kanhailal

Pebet & Memoirs of Africa

Summary

H. Kanhailal's work in Manipuri theatre is at the forefront of contemporary Indian theatre. With his group Kalakshetra Manipur and Sabitri, his leading actress, he has covered new Ground in the use of vigorously physical, non-verbal, gestural theatre, using themes and motifs strongly rooted in Manipuri Folklore and culture. His productions-notably Pebet and Memoirs of Africa-evolve through an Organic Creative process involving improvisation, Song and dance, Drawing on traditional Dance and martial Arts traditions.

This volume takes a close Look at the World of Kanhailal in which his theatre is so firmly located : The Political and socioeconomic Heritage of Manipur, its Cultural politics, Kanhailal's life in theatre, the partnership with his actress-wife Sabitri, her contribution to the productions, and the influence of Manipuri cultural forms on his style, technique and subject matter. His two major productions are reconstructed in the form of detailed performance texts, along with comprehensive photographic documentation.

Pebet is a folktale deeply entrenched in the psyche of the Manipuri people, in which a Mother Bird fights to protect her Children from a predatory cat. Kanhailal politicizes this familiar story, turning it into a struggle against the political and cultural colonization of Manipur. Memoirs of Africa is a short theatre piece based on a poem by L. Somorendra Singh in which the History of oppression in Africa stands for oppression anywhere in the world. The Play focuses on the eternal persecution and Survival of Mi, who could be either male or female.
