Numerical Methods for Scientists and Engineers (3/e)

Summary

Computation has become indispensable tool in the analysis and exploration of a wide range of physical phenomena. The present book offers a detailed exposition of the various numerical techniques used in science and engineering. While the emphasis is on practical aspects, the various techniques are discussed in sufficient detail and depth so as to enable their implementation in solving a wide range of problems.

Over one hundred worked examples illustrate a range of numerical algorithms and their limitations. A special feature is the inclusion of an extensive discussion of the pitfalls in numerical computations, as well as error-estimation techniques. In addition, over 500 unsolved problems (with answers) and over 200 computer programs (in FORTRAN and C, covering all topics, and provided in a separate CD) give the book a strong pedagogic focus.

Examples and exercises are drawn from areas as diverse as fluid mechanics, celestial mechanics and seismology. This book will be extremely useful for the graduate students as well as for research workers in science and engineering.
